So You Want To Start A Business? Start Here.

There’s a laundry list of things to do once you’ve decided to start your own business, but it’s not always clear which of those things to do first. Do you fill out tax forms or the DBA at the local county seat first? (Add to list: define DBA.) What about location scouting for your new office? Hiring the personal assistant?

All those things are well and good, but none should come first. The absolute very first thing you need to do is look at yourself. Look into your heart and discover your passion. Working is hard; having your own business is grueling work, so you must have a passion for your work if you want it to succeed.¬†As silly and melodramatic as it sounds, asking yourself what you’re in love with in life will be a key factor in the success or failure of your new business.

Here are a few questions to get you thinking:

  • Analyze your personal history: what one thing has always been there in your life? For example, was it art, tinkering with things, or caring for others?
  • What opportunities or activities made you catch your breath or thrilled you?
  • What do you receive the most compliments about?
  • What have others suggested that you do?
  • What have you always dreamed of doing?

While these questions may not give you a definite answer right away, they will get the creative juices flowing to match what you were made to do with what you will do in your new business. Take some time for this step – it’s the first and the biggest, and it may well change your life.
